Jean-Paul Gaultier is a designer I’ve loved since the early 90s. Back then, I knew him mostly by name because one of the very first perfumes I had received as a gift was his original Classique for women (I even remember not really being a big fan of the scent, but absolutely loved the bottle). I wasn’t very familiar with his designs, other than the occasional runway shots I would see on Fashion TV. But I remember that for some reason, there was something about his eyes and his features that gave the impression he was very kind, and that, made me like him.
But back to his designs… Over time and after seeing more of his collections, even though I had always considered his clothes to be too eccentric for my taste, there was something that attracted me to his funky designs (I even went to see his expo at Montréal’s Musée des Beaux-Arts in 2011). I love designs that are edgy, but his are edgy in an over-the-top kind of way. They aren’t necessarily something I would wear, but nonetheless, some pieces are stunning and just bad ass. Another thing I love about him and find people tend to forget is that he is one of the very first designers whose runway shows were very inclusive when it comes to models, and we’re talking about the 90s, so… that was huge back then. He doesn’t get enough credit for that in my opinion.
Anyhoo… check out my favourite looks from his latest show (in collaboration with Sacai‘s Chitose Abe), click here to see the entire collection, or here for my latest #FashionWeekFaves!
